Managing the risk of falling

Where personnel are required to work near water and a risk of a fall Is present appropriate edge protection MUST be installed.

 

Where edge protection Is not suitable or practicable, a fall restraint and fall arrest system MUST be installed.

 

All areas where personnel are required to work around water are to be maintained to a high standard, ground conditions and work environments MUST be free of any trip hazards.

Life jackets

Lifejackets MUST:

  • be worn at all times when working on or near water where there is a risk of drowning

  • be appropriate for the working conditions, the location and the type of clothing being worn

  • be used, cared for, maintained, and serviced as required by the manufacturer.

 

All personnel MUST be trained in the correct use, inspection and care of the life jackets used.

Dive equipment

All plant and equipment used in the diving operation MUST be documented in equipment registers.

​

All documentation used to facilitate the diving operation MUST also note the equipment used and reference to the equipment register.

​

All plant and equipment used for the dive operation MUST be of a type and capacity that is suitable for the dive operation.

​

All equipment used for the dive operation MUST be checked by the dive supervisor prior to use.

 

All divers MUST check their personal diving equipment before each dive to ensure that its operational integrity and efficiency is maintained.

Dive personnel

All dive personnel MUST be suitably qualified and medically cleared prior to commencement of work. Evidence of qualification MUST be provided to Contact prior to any work be undertaken.

​

All dive operations MUST be overseen by a qualified dive supervisor. 

 

At all times when divers are in the water, they MUST be monitored by a divers attendant.

 

A standby diver MUST be present while divers are in the water and MUST be able to respond as and when needed.

Dive planning 

All documentation that relates to the dive MUST be maintained on the dive site at all times.

​

Prior to the dive operation being undertaken, a comprehensive risk assessment of the work, the site and the requirements of the dive MUST be undertaken.

​

All dive plans MUST be approved prior to any work being undertaken.

 

Any vessels used to the dive work MUST be certified to the relevant maritime standard.

Emergency planning

Rescue equipment MUST be available which is appropriate for the type, location and scale of work that is being undertaken.

​

The unique risk of the work MUST be identified and considered in regard to the emergency plan.

​

Oxygen resuscitation equipment MUST be available at the dive site and ready for immediate use if required.

 

Emergency planning MUST consider the need for emergency recompression chamber support, the location of the closest facility should be noted.
